Book Review

Call for Obstruction (The Courier Trilogy 1)

by Wendy Jean Howard probably took me two days to read, sadly it usually takes me two or three times as long to write a review. When it comes to typing, I’m faster than a sloth, but not by much. Wendy’s story is a very fast read, which I rather enjoyed. Unique, well-crafted characters, and an interesting plot. I can see why it won the Textnovel Writing Contest. If there were any grammatical errors or layout issues (the bane of reading Indie books) I did not see them.
The basic plot, with-out much in the way of spoilers, is Barry, down on his luck, accepts a job he shouldn’t and gets dragged deeper and deeper into a supernatural war. Bad part is that he’s NOT on the side of angels, and if the bad guys win Barry has helped bring about hell on earth.

I liked it, I bet you will as well.

Turning the mundane into adventure

Adventure Time

Once upon a time in the Land of Farishes, dawn broke across the realm to reveal two sick little girls. They were cranky, they sneezed a lot, were probably infectious, and did I mention cranky? Sadly, the local educational entities did not allow children with leishmaniasis or bubonic plague or whatever affliction the girls had to attend classes. The lovely Lady Red had a meeting she had to attend as there were underlings who failed to understand her simple, perfectly clear directions. Floggings would probably be necessary. Which left our exceptionally handsome leading man to deal with the miniature plague carriers. Risking death, or worse, man-flu, our ruggedly handsome hero screwed his courage to the sticking point and attended to the needs of the little girls.

Cranky!

After assisting the girls don their raiment, kilts of course, and wiping the glob of mucus from his hair, a gift from the smallest of the sickly short ones, the classically handsome hero prepared breakfast. However, all was not well. The was a dearth of maple syrup in the land! What evil Canadian vampire had drained the trees and syrup bottles! Worried the girls might resort to cannibalism rather than eat waffles without maple syrup, our hero set out on a quest.
Long and perilous was the journey, uphill, both ways, in the snow! Worse, there was a Maryland driver unaware that driving and self-performed pedicures did not mix. Despite the inability of Old Line State drivers to drive, howling, gale forces winds, the little girls near death from a lack of food and reminding our handsome hero of said fact every few seconds, Team Farish arrived at the Emporium of Lions.
Maple syrup was bartered for as well as honey (side-quest!), and after trudging uphill in the snow for the requisite five miles, Team Farish returned home.

Waffles with out syrup is sacrilege!

Waffles were toasted, maple syrup poured, and happiness was achieved.
No one is crying, for the moment.

All was well, until one little girl noticed the other little girl had the better fork. But that is a tale for another time.

Hand-crafted short stories of horror

There's a reason why I’m invited to pay to attend Stoker-Con and Hank Schwaeble is invited to Stoker-Con to pick up his award. These are excellent stories, well told. Covering the gamut from Western-ish, to 70s Kolchak, to after the apocalypse.

These are the hand-crafted stories where every word, turn of phrase, each twist is exactly as it should be. American Nocturne is what authors dream of writing, but rarely achieve.
Filled with a variety of tales of psychological horror, my personal favorite type, Hank’s stories gave me a slow creep of dread, page after page, wondering what will happen next, and rarely seeing the twist. If you are looking for splatter-porn to scare you, try another author.
I will admit there were a few layout glitches which were annoying but did not detract overall.
Favorite story – Mugwumps or Unnatural Selection
